Osimhen scores as Napoli clinch first Serie A title in 33 years

Victor Osimhen scored the equalizer as Napoli drew 1-1 with Udinese on Thursday night.

The victory saw them finally broken their three-decade Scudetto title drought.

Osimhen, who is also leading the race for the Italian Serie A golden boot, scored in the 52nd minute to cancel out Sandi Lovric’s first-half strike, which sent Napoli fans into a frenzy.

Napoli only needed a draw to clinch their first domestic crown since 1990.

Napoli’s previous two titles were during the days of the legendary Argentinian player, Maradona, whose name now graces their stadium.

Following those glory days, the club had fallen into financial decline, relegation, and bankruptcy. As recently as 2006, they were playing in Serie C. Although they won the Coppa Italia three times in the past 11 seasons, the Scudetto was what Napoli fans truly desired.

With a new cast of superstars, such as Osimhen and Georgia winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who contributed 12 goals and 10 assists, Napoli managed to secure their third Serie A title.

Last weekend, they had the opportunity to lift the title with six games to spare, but they could only draw with local rivals Salernitana.

However, with a 16-point advantage over second-placed Lazio, Napoli’s third Serie A title is now confirmed.
