Liverpool suffered a setback in the title chase after being held to a 1-1 draw by Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Saturday, May 7.
Signing in January Luis Diaz showed why he is a vital member of Jurgen Klopp’s side by equalizing after Spurs grabbed the lead in the second half via Heung Min Son.
In a hard-fought match, they could only manage a 1-1 tie. The tie has severely harmed the Reds’ chances of capturing the title and the quadruple this season.
Liverpool got off to a fast start, with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Luis Diaz looking active in the attacking third.
Mohammed Salah, making his 250th game for Liverpool, looked energetic on the night, but his deflected attempt went wide.
On the opposite end, Harry Kane had an opportunity, but Jordan Henderson superbly stopped it. The biggest opportunity of the first half for the home side came from defender Virgil Van Dijk, who had two fantastic chances to put his team ahead.
Tottenham took a surprising lead eleven minutes into the second half when Son converted a cross from Ryan Sessegnon to startle the Anfield fans. The equalizer came from Liverpool’s January acquisition Diaz, whose deflected effort left Hugo Lloris stranded.
The Reds were leading in the latter moments, but Tottenham hung on for a draw, thereby ending Liverpool’s quadruple ambitions. Manchester City will have the opportunity to jump three points ahead at the top of the Premier League table if they defeat Newcastle on Sunday.
