LaLiga: Updated standings for title race, top 4, and relegation survival.
Following Barca’s dramatic victory over Valencia on Saturday with a stoppage-time goal from Robert Lewandowski, Real Madrid and Barcelona are still tied on points at the top of La Liga. Real Madrid rallied to regain the lead in the standings, but they could only draw 1-1 with Girona, narrowing the difference between the two teams to just one point.
After Atletico Madrid lost their third match of the season at Cadiz on a goal by Ruben Sobrino in the 99th minute to add injury to insult following their midweek Champions League elimination, it appears that there will only be two teams competing this season.
Despite Real Betis’ road victory over Real Sociedad bringing them even on points and goal differential, Los Colchoneros managed to hang on to third place by the skin of their teeth. In the meantime, Villarreal lost their first game without manager Unai Emery, who left for Aston Villa, at Athletic Bilbao.
In the bottom half of the standings, Rayo Vallecano travelled to Sevilla and handed Jorge Sampaoli’s team its first home loss since he returned to the club, joining Almeria’s victory at home and Cadiz’s thrilling win over Atletico. The derby against Real Betis is coming up, and the only reason the Spanish giants are not in the bottom three is goal differential. With their draw against Madrid, Girona earned a crucial point that helped them escape the drop.
