Karim Benzema has broken Cristiano Ronaldo’s record as he prepares to leave Real Madrid after 14 years at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Benzema scored from the spot in the 18th minute to equalise for Real against Athletic and by doing so overtook Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for most goals scored against the club.
The Frenchman was substituted almost immediately with a rousing standing ovation from Carlo Ancelotti and the Bernabeu crowd.
Benzema scored a total of 354 goals for the club and looked emotional as he made his way to the bench as Ancelotti embraced him on the touchline.
Athletic Bilbao had gone a goal up through Oihan Sancet just moments into the second-half.
However, with 20 minutes to go, Real were awarded a controversial penalty after Eder Militao went down clutching his face in the box with Yuri Berchiche adjudged to have fouled the Brazilian.
And Benzeman stepped up to take the penalty, slotting in straight down the middle.
