Jadon Sancho, a Manchester United winger, has explained why he used a shinpad with a picture of his face to celebrate his Europa League goal on Thursday night.
Sancho gave United the lead against Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova in the 17th minute, and Cristiano Ronaldo later sealed the 2-0 victory by converting a penalty kick.
Sancho, however, whipped off one of his shinguards and gave the crowd a thumbs up after smashing the ball in. The 22-year-old later revealed that a young fan had given him the unique shinpads last week, which seemed a little strange at the time.
“A little kid gave me some shinpads and asked me to wear them,” Sancho explained after the match.
“I said ‘Yeah, no problem’ and that was a little gesture from me when I scored, showing him that I was wearing his shinpads that he gave me.”
