Ally McCoist has questioned Cristiano Ronaldo’s link to Napoli as the Rangers legend, does not understand why the Italian club would be interested in signing the five-time Ballon d’Or in January.
The star player for Manchester United is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford as a result of a public fallout with Erik ten Hag.
Ronaldo and Man Utd controversy
The 37-year-old caused controversy for United when he stormed down the tunnel before the Premier League match against Tottenham was over after refusing to play as a substitute.
Since then, Ronaldo has been left off the team that will play Chelsea, and there are rumors that he might be allowed to leave the team during the January transfer window.
On Tuesday, the forward traveled to Manchester United’s Carrington training facility in anticipation of a confrontation with Ten Hag regarding a potential return to the team.
However, Italian club Napoli have emerged as a potential rival to sign the Portuguese star in the coming months. Ronaldo was heavily linked with a move away from the club during the summer as well, but he failed to draw any significant interest.
McCoist questions Cristiano Ronaldo’s link to Napoli
However, with Napoli currently flying high at the top of Serie A, McCoist is having trouble understanding why the Italian team would want to bring the forward to the in-form club.
Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, McCoist said: “I don’t know why Napoli would take him. I genuinely don’t know.
“I’ve seen enough of Napoli this season to say that they’re absolutely on top of their game. They had another brilliant result at the weekend beating Roma 1-0 away from home. They’re flying on all fronts.
“I might be wrong and he might go there, but I don’t see what he would bring to Napoli at this moment in time.”
McCoist added that, in hindsight, Manchester United may be kicking themselves for not pushing Ronaldo out of the door in the summer.
“The biggest person that he’s letting down is himself,” added the former Scotland striker. “That’s biggest tragedy of the whole thing.
“I’ve said for three months or four months that he should have left in the summer. The manager should have dealt with the problem because he should have seen a bigger problem coming.
“Ronaldo is one of the greatest players who have ever lived. He’s been a joy to watch and he’s given us so much happiness that it’s incredible, but one thing that he won’t beat is old Father Time. That catches up with everybody.
“Ten Hag has taken over Manchester United and his job is to rebuild and get them back up the league.
“Anybody can tell you that Ronaldo is not going to be a part of that building process, so this problem should have been snuffed out, in my opinion.
“People will say he scored 17 goals or 18 goals, I know he did, but the problem should not be there because it should have been dealt with in the summer.”
