With a possible concussion, Harry Maguire was pulled off in the second half of England’s World Cup opener against Iran.
Gary Lineker’s comment
Former England striker Gary Lineker, a BBC commentator, has disclosed the reason behind Maguire’s departure from the Iran game, saying: “Harry Maguire has blurred vision, but is all alright otherwise, that’s the news that is coming out of the England dressing room.”
The Manchester United defender was replaced by Eric Dier in the 71st minute of the Group B match, with England’s medical team doing concussion checks on him before he left the field.
Maguire was a somewhat controversial choice in Gareth Southgate’s final World Cup roster after losing his spot in the United team at club level, but his performance against Iran allayed any concerns about his fitness. The 29-year-old was tremendous at the back alongside John Stones, but he will now be evaluated further before returning to the pitch.
With the centre-back appearing to have escaped concussion, it is believed that he will be eligible for England’s second group-stage game against the United States on Friday.
