Old Trafford legend Roy Keane has blasted Fred after Manchester United’s FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City, saying the midfielder’s error in the build-up to the winning goal was the ‘height of stupidity’.
Germany international Ilkay Gundogan scored twice as Pep Guardiola’s side won their seventh FA Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over local rivals United at Wembley.
Gundogan’s first goal came after just 13 seconds – making it the fastest FA Cup final goal in history – but Manchester United equalised before half-time thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ penalty.
The Manchester City captain restored their lead with another long-range volley six minutes after the restart and this came from a free-kick on the wing that Fred gave away for a foul on Kevin de Bruyne.
And Keane, a Red Devils’ legend, pointed out that it is not the first time the Brazilian has cost his side.
“Fred had Kevin de Bruyne where he wanted him,” the former Manchester United captain told ITV Football. “De Bruyne has his back to goal and then Fred fouls him.
“It’s the height of stupidity… But we’ve seen that from him so many times over the years.”
