FA charges Ivan Toney over betting law violations

Ivan Toney

Ivan Toney of Brentford has been charged by the Football Association with an additional 30 alleged betting law violations.

He was charged with 232 alleged betting law violations last month.

The 26-year-old Toney has 10 Premier League goals this season but was not selected for the England World Cup team.

Previously, Brentford stated: “The club has been in discussion with Ivan and his legal representatives. Those conversations will continue privately.”

“We will make no further comment until the matter has been completed,” the club’s statement continued.

Toney has until Wednesday, January 4 to respond to the new FA misconduct allegations regarding alleged violations of FA rule E8, which forbids players from sharing confidential information for the purpose of betting or placing bets on games.

If they are confirmed, he could be subject to a protracted suspension. In December 2020, England defender Kieran Trippier received a 10-week suspension from the FA for providing information to enable others to wager on his transfer from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid.

Joey Barton, a Burnley player at the time, was given an 18-month suspension in 2017 that was later reduced to 13 months after an appeal. He had admitted to placing 1,260 bets on football over a ten-year period.

After learning about the allegations, Toney stated earlier this month that he was “helping the Football Association with their enquiries.”
