Marcus Rashford has disclosed that he was benched for Manchester United’s victory over Wolves in the Premier League because he slept in and arrived late for a team meeting.
On New Year’s Eve, the in-form United forward was one of the substitutes for the Premier League match at Molineux, but he came on to score the game’s only goal.
Erik ten Hag, the manager of the Red Devils, claimed the England international was benched for the game due to a lack of composure, and Rashford concurred.
“I was a little bit late for a meeting,” he told BT Sport. “I just slept in and overslept. It’s a mistake that can happen.
“[I was] obviously disappointed not to play, but I understand the decision. I think we can draw a line under it and move on.”
After Rashford’s game-winning performance off the bench, teammate Luke Shaw was all praise for him.
“When you’ve got someone like Marcus Rashford to come on in the second half, you know there’s a goal coming,” he added.
“I think he’s in a good way at the moment. It’s nice to see it. Everyone knows the quality he’s got, and he can be one of the best of the world if he keeps going.”
