Foprmer Barceloan star Dani Alves will face trial for sexual assault after the former he was formally indicted by a judge in Spain.
Alves was arrested and jailed in January over allegations he assaulted a women in a Barcelona nightclub in December, with his Mexican club Pumas UNAM terminating his contract.
After having bail and a number of requests to be released rejected, a judge said today that she had found evidence of wrongdoing by the 40-year-old.
Alves claims he had consensual sex with his accuser and his lawyer responded to the ruling by saying he is ‘upset with the narrative of the facts’ and ‘disagrees with it’.
The persecution will now submit formal charges against him before a date is set for the trial.
In Spain, sexual assault and rape convictions can lead to a prison sentence of between four to 15 years.
