Arsenal defender, Pablo Mari, who is currently on loan at Monza has been stabbed.
The 29-year-old has been taken to hospital after being stabbed in a Milan shopping centre, according to Sky Italy.
Sky Italy reports that Mari is conscious and club manager Raffaele Palladino is due to visit him on Thursday evening.
Mari is on loan at Italian side Monza from Arsenal, who signed him from Brazilian club Flamengo in 2020.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has said Mari “seems to be OK” and confirmed the defender is in hospital.
“I know [club technical director] Edu has been in touch with his relatives,” Arteta said after Thursday’s 2-0 defeat at PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League.
“He is in hospital. He seems to be ok. I will get a briefing now about what happened.”
Arsenal issued a club statement on Thursday night: “We are all shocked to hear the dreadful news about the stabbing in Italy. Which has put a number of people in hospital including our on-loan centre-back Pablo Mari.
“We have been in contact with Pablo’s agent who has told us he’s in hospital and is not seriously hurt.
“Our thoughts are with Pablo and the other victims of this dreadful incident.”
Arsenal lose to PSV
PSV Eindhoven took advantage of Arsenal’s shaky defense as they defeated them 2-0 in the Netherlands.
To avoid a play-off match in the knockout rounds of Europe’s secondary competition, finishing first in Group A is crucial. Top Champions League teams, like Barcelona, are slipping into the competition’s knockout stages.
Nevertheless, the gap between the Gunners and the Dutch giants has now been reduced to two points, so the Gunners must win their final match against FC Zurich.
The goals on the night were scored by Joey Veerman and former Newcastle United striker Luuk de Jong. But the score could have been much higher if it weren’t for three goals that were disallowed for offside.
