Akwa United vs Plateau: Super Eagles coach Peseiro spotted at Uyo for NPFL game

Jose Peseiro, the head coach of the Super Eagles, and one of his assistants were spotted in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State this weekend at the NPFL match between Akwa United and Plateau United.

The game’s venue, Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, released a photo of Peseiro on its Twitter page.

A member of the NFF Technical Committee and the chairman of Akwa United, Paul Bassey, welcomed the Portuguese and his assistant.

Kemifilani reports that Peseiro has now made two trips to league venues since taking over as the Super Eagles’ head coach.

He traveled to Ilorin, Kwara State, over the weekend to attend a league match between Sunshine Stars and Kwara United.

Players from Peseiro’s home country who might be selected to play for the Eagles will be motivated by his frequent trips to league venues.

Peseiro and the Nigeria Football Federation verbally agreed on December 29, 2021, that Peseiro would take over as Gernot Rohr’s assistant coach for the Super Eagles.

He was scheduled to go to the Cameroon 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, but only as a “observer” while Augustine Eguavoen, the interim manager, oversaw the team.

However, the deal ultimately failed because Eguavoen was kept after the competition. Peseiro finally became the new head coach on May 15, 2022.

In the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, he led the Eagles to victories over Sierra Leone and So Tomé and Principe after losing his first two games, a pair of friendlies against Mexico and Ecuador.

The Eagles also achieved their biggest victory under his leadership to date, a 10-0 thrashing of So Tomé and Principe in their 2023 AFCON second Group A qualifier in Morocco.
