The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has refuted claims made by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu that President Muhammadu Buhari did not apply for the Attestation of Results certificate he was presented with on Friday.

In an interview with Punch Newspaper, WAEC spokesman, Damianus Ojijeogu said “We would not have given him the document if he didn’t apply. It is only Buhari or a court that can ask for the results. There is no other person. So he asked for it.”

This is contrary to the claims made by Shehu in an opinion piece he wrote and in an interview with the same newspaper where he said that WAEC issued the certificate to the president because the council needed to save its integrity following the controversy generated by the erstwhile missing certificate.

According to Shehu, “No, the President did not apply for the documents. I made this clear in an opinion I wrote on Friday. The presentation of the documents to the President was strictly an initiative of WAEC. They said they read about the controversy on the pages of newspapers and saw the need to save the integrity of the council.”

President Buhari was presented with the certificate at the Aso Villa in Abuja on Friday.
