Northern youths demand Ayu resignation

The leadership of the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria has urged the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Iyorchia Ayu, to toe the path of honour and resign from the position.

According to the Council, Ayu’s resignation will indicate that there is fairness in the PDP as it will pave the way for a southern to fill the position.

This was contained in a statement signed by the NYCN National President, Isah Abubakar, made available to newsmen on Saturday.

NYCN said, “We plead with Ayu to understand the concept of justice and equity, the spirit of oneness, to be patriotic enough to save the party from losing the 2023 general elections and resign. Nigerians and the entire country will be grateful if Ayu considers resignation.”

The youths added, “The PDP is known as a National party but with the emergency of Atiku Abubakar as the party’s flagbearer in 2023 and the continuity of Ayu chairmanship, a lot of people will see the party as a regional political party; this is a bad reputation for the party and it is unacceptable to all party faithful.”

“If this is the only thing that will maintain peace and grant the party victory in the elections, Ayu should do so for the victory of the party and the interest of all Nigerians,” the statement pleaded.

The northern youths made this known amid crisis in the PDP over Ayu’s refusal to resign after promising to do so if a northern emerged as the party’s presidential candidate.

At the forefront of the call is the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, whose camp has pulled out of the party’s presidential campaign council.

Wike has also alleged that Ayu took N1 billion from a presidential aspirant to influence the party’s presidential primary won by former vice president Atiku Abubakar.
