BET Africa has announced the acts nominated for the 2016 BET Awards
which will take place at Microsoft Theater, Los Angeles, California on
the 26th of June, 2016.
Eight African artists have been nominated for the Best African Act Awards and they are:
AKA (South Africa)
Cassper Nyovest (South Africa)
Black Coffee (South Africa)
Wizkid (Nigeria & winner of the award in 2012)
Yemi Alade (Nigeria)
Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania),
Mzvee (Ghana)
Serge Beynaud (Cote D’Ivoire)
Historically winners in this category have been given their award
backstage, during a pre recorded segment which isn’t filmed in-front of
the live awards audience.
To add insult to injury the African segment doesn’t air in the United
States. Matter of fact Wiz snubbed the awards last year and even put
the organizers on boat.
But with the star boy going to Number 1 on Billboard with Drake (who has bagged 5 nominations) will this year be different?
Same with Yemi Alade!
Recall that last year, after the winner of the category was
announced, Yemi Alade took to her social media page to drag the awards
committee for three reasons:
That the Best African Act award was given backstage, before the main event
That the award programme is simply ‘glorified’
That the awards organisers were guilty of favouring Ghana’s Stonebwoy over her
However, the singer has taken a sharp turn. Moments after MTV alerted
her of the 2016 nomination, Yemi Alade quickly took to her page to
celebrate. “Thank you for the love. I would be no where without it,” she
wrote, before asking loyal fans to go vote for her.
