Serena Williams fined $17,000 for violation during US Open Final

Tennis champion, Serena Williams has been fined $17,000 for three code violations at Saturday’s US Open Final that saw her lose to 20-year-old, Naomi Osaka.

The US Open has levied fines of $4,000 for the coaching violation, $3,000 for racket abuse and $10,000 for the verbal abuse, against Williams.

The controversy-laden game saw Williams penalised more than once by umpire Carlos Ramos. Williams was accused of receiving illegal coaching through hand signals from her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou during the game.

Williams denied the accusation, as she consistently spoke to Ramos demanding an apology.

She went ahead to call Ramos a “thief” after he handed her a full game penalty for smashing her racket.

Williams has been cheered by many for standing up against sexism.
