The House of Representatives has ordered its Committee on Healthcare Services to investigate alleged mismanagement of funds in the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
The resolution was reached on Tuesday after adopting a motion moved by Esosa Iyawe.
In the motion, Iyawe said the NHIA, formerly known as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), has declined quality due to mismanagement.
He stated, “despite the huge budgetary allocations, records have shown that only a negligible 3% of persons in the formal sector have access to health insurance.”
Mr Iyawe said the officials of the NHIA are conniving with Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) to embezzle the funds.
He said, “The scheme’s implementation had been mired with corruption, lack of transparency and accountability, irregularities among HMOs and ill-treatment of enrollees by healthcare providers.”
The motion was adopted unanimously without debate by the House.
