The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove all economic sanctions imposed on the Niger Republic under the reign of military junta.
NEF disclosed this on Tuesday in a statement by NEF director of Publicity and Advocacy, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed.
Kemi Filani News recalls that following the overthrown of the Niger civilian government, the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, as part of its resolutions, ordered members to effect economic sanctions on Niger, including the closure of borders.
Reacting to sanctions imposed, NEF said removing sanctions on the country would make negotiations easier to conduct.
According to him, the sanctions imposed are negatively affecting the morale and welfare of citizens of both countries and will detract from the existing positive disposition towards Nigeria’s position.
He said that removing various sanctions would make negotiations.
“It will compound the security and humanitarian crises in the ECOWAS region. It is likely to weaken and further divide the ECOWAS and provide greater access for non-African interests into the lives of Africans, with negative consequences”, he said.
