Former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, has described agitation for secession by some groups in South-East and South-West as “idiotic”.
The Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) want the establishment of Biafra nation for people from the South East.
Similarly, the Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho and his numerous loyalists have several times staged protest in the South West, demanding for the actualization of Oduduwa Republic for the Yoruba nation.
The activities of the secession agitators have caused unrest in many parts of the country.
However, Obasanjo who spoke in Abeokuta the Ogun State capital on Wednesday, said disintegration would not solve the problem of the country.
Obasanjo cited examples of Pakistan, Yugoslavia and Sudan as countries which had broken away but yet to find lasting solutions to their problems.
According to him, Nigerians should blame themselves for the country’s woes rather than blaming God for bringing the different tribes together as one nation.
“In this age and time that we are talking about the reintegration of Africa for economic development, disintegration of any country will be almost idiotic.
“Even if we have Igboland as an independent country, Yorubaland an independent country and Fulani/Hausaland an independent country”, he said.
