One month after the controversial shooting of #Endsars protesters at Lekki Tollgate, Lagos, the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has said that indeed the soldiers went to the toll gate with live ammunitions.
According to Ibrahim Taiwo, Commander of the division while testifying before the panel the Lagos State Government set up to probe the incident, the ammunition was not in use.
While being cross-examined by Olumide Fusika, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Taiwo insisted that no one was shot dead as soldiers only fired blank ammunition at the protesters and not live rounds.
“The soldiers they were both given both live and blank bullets. In this particular case, we saw that these protests had been infiltrated by some hoodlums…You had peaceful protesters no doubt. But there were also hoodlums who sought to take advantage. That is why they were armed [with] blank bullets in addition to the live [bullets] they were carrying,” he said.
