When
it rains it pours that is the summary of the travails of Mr.Ibrahim
Ashiru. Two years ago life was like the proverbial bed of roses, a
thriving printing business, living a good life with his family. What
more can a man ask for?

Then tragedy struck. he started experiencing
severe pains in his abdomen, what was supposed to be a routine medical
check up marked the beginning of a series of sad events in the lives of
this once vibrant family. He was diagnosed as having severe renal
malfuction ( Kidney failure), since then he has been to 3 different
hospitals in three different states in the country, these journeys with
all its attendant financial burdens has inevitable led to the crash of
his business.

When
we visited him at his residence at No 78, cemetery street, by Ondo
street, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, he was quite a sight that will pull at the
heart of even the most cold hearted.Exhibiting all the classic symptoms
of a liver failure patient, protruding tummy and swollen foot, he told
us the many challenges his family has being facing but the most touching
is the part where he told us about his aged mother mama hawley as she
is fondly called who foots all the medical bills as well as the upkeep
of the family since the collapse of his business, all these from her
business of selling fried yam / boiled yam and beans on.We visited her
at her makeshift ‘shop’ on Hawley street on Lagos island by Skye bank
and there was no dry eyes amongst us after she was done narrating her
ordeal and kept saying please help me oooh (e se anu mi). This is an
appeal for an ordinary, everyday Nigerian like me and you, he is not a
celebrity, he is not a soccer star, just another unfortunate citizen
struck down in his prime with an ailment that doesn’t discriminate. Also
for the sake of this aged mother who should be fended for at this
advanced age not fending for her son.God bless you as you respond to
this cry of help.
