378 medicine stores including pharmacies have been shut down by the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria , for failure to abide by the rules stipulated by the council for companies and people involved in the distribution of drugs.
Mrs. Antonia Aruya the council’s director of inspection and monitoring stated this at a press conference in Osogbo on Friday after carrying out an enforcement exercise that lasted a whole week.
Speaking further, she decried the high number of uneducated patent medicine vendors, who could not tell the names of the drugs they dispensed let alone have the required knowledge to handle them.
Aruya said drugs could not be left to ignorant persons to handle because it would pose a threat to human health.
The PCN director said all pharmaceutical facilities were required to register with the organisation and that it would ensure they were continually licensed to legally start drug distribution and dispensing.
