Naira redesign: Sowore mocks as Melaye donates cash
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has said the cash donation made by the spokesperson for the presidential campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dino Melaye, to a foundation could be a result of the plan by the Federal Government to redesign naira notes.
Melaye made the donation during the memorial service/evening of tributes for late human rights activist, Ariyo Dare-Atoye, on Saturday.
The former Senator representing Kogi West pledged N500,000 annual donation to an education fund for the deceased’s children.
He said, “They told me that there is a plan for a foundation, education foundation for the children, I am so impressed about that and I am making a pledge that I will give an annual donation of N500, 000 for that foundation and I brought the first part of it, N500,000.”
Sowore slams Melaye
Sowore, who was present at the event, took to the podium to mock the effort made by Melaye.
He said, “You can already see the effect of the Central Bank’s re-designation (sic), politicians are carrying cash. Let me say this, this is the political season and I am not here for politics.”
CBN to redesign naira notes
Recall that the Central Bank of Nigeria announced last week that it would be changing naira notes from N200 up tp N1000.
Explaining the reason for the policy, the federal government stated that it would expose those who have stashed money in houses to be used in buying votes and other nefarious activities come 2023.
