A fatal crash leading to a tanker fire that occurred at about 0213hrs on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway around Conoil filling station, before Sagam interchange, Ogun State, has claimed 10 lives.
The Federal Road Safety Corps stated that the suspected cause of the multiple crashes was excessive speed which led to the loss of control on the part of an IVECO TRUCK which smashed the tanker body, leading to the inferno.
This was confirmed by the FRSC Sector Commander, Florence Okpe, who mentioned the 10 lives lost, adding that no one was left injured.
“The suspected cause of the multiple crashes was excessive speed which led to loss of control on the part of the IVECO TRUCK which smashed the tanker’s body resulting in a fire outbreak due to leakage,” she said.
Okpe stated that the 10 persons killed were burnt beyond recognition.
“The burnt bodies were taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University, Sagamu.. Some of the burnt vehicles were towed off the road leaving the tankers for the fuel content to be transloaded,” she added.
The Sector Commandercommiserated with the family of the victims after visiting the scene of the incident.
She also advised motorists to drive cautiously, obey traffic rules and regulations as well as consider each other while driving.
