Skin shaming is the horrible act or practice of making fun of or making negative remarks about someone’s appearance, and Nigerian celebrity singers have gotten a fair share of this mockery.
Over the years, it has been widespread and occurs to varied degrees. Shaming someone for having acne, having skin that is “too dark” or “too light,” or making any other derogatory remarks about someone else’s skin are all examples of this.
Skin shaming has affected almost everyone at some point, but not everyone experiences it to the same degree as celebrities.
Below are Nigerian celebrities who have been victims of skin shaming;
Billionaire daughter, DJ Cuppy
Nigerian singer and DJ, DJ Cuppy once uploaded pictures of herself on Instagram where she was flaunting her body in a nice swimsuit and glasses.
Not too long after the pictures were upload, the vitriol started. People began saying all manner of things about DJ Cuppy’s skin including “Cuppy, you don dey black baby… Abi nah my eyes”, “No filter why nah , e go come be like say you no fresh”, “You don’t have a fine skin at all why babe???”, and more.
It eventually got to the point that some individuals even had to speak up on behalf of Cuppy. “”If she goes under the knife or starts using bleaching cream now, you see all these trash will still be the ones saying ‘why don’t you love yourself?’, mind what you say to people. Don’t push people into depression”. a fan wrote.
Sean Tizzle
Sean Tizzle was made fun of for having pale complexion. In fact, when a reporter questioned Sean Tizzle if he lightens his complexion, Tizzle left the room. This happened in 2016 during an interview with The Net NG.
In response, Sean Tizzle said: “I don’t know why would bring this question out” before putting up the F U sign and walking off the set. Online and offline, Sean Tizzle got dragged for his skin. It was non-stop.
Seyi Shay
Popular singer, Tiwa Savage once mocked her colleague, Seyi Shay for her skin during a fight in a salon. Tiwa said of Seyi Shay “Look at you. You look half-dead. Look at your skin. You know what? For a clear skin you need to mind your business. That’s what will clear up your fucking ugly skin”.

Tiwa Savage
The amount of criticism Tiwa Savage received when she posted the image of herself below in 2015 was unbelievable, not only for the dress but also for her skin and complexion. People made fun of her legs, feet, and face because they “didn’t fit her face.”
There were so many comments on the photograph that Tiwa had to answer to them all by posting a picture of bleaching cream with the caption “Ore na to begin dey bleach o.”
Jaywon
Jaywon was being criticized for the color of his legs after posting a photo of himself on social media in a camouflage top and green shorts (see image below). Sayings such as “Your leg doesn’t even rhyme with your face.. your leg looking like roasted plantain.. say no to skin bleaching” were used to severely skin shame Jaywon. In response, Jaywon said: “Even person wey no Dey rub cream dem say e Dey bleach…. your papa just fail cuz is obvious you no get home training abeg carry your negative life comot for my page.”
