BOJ Finally Releases His Long-Awaited GBAGADA EXPRESS Album.
Boj, a great Alte singer from Nigeria, has released a new album titled Gbagada Express. This project, which serves as his third studio album, is named after the town where he grew up.
BOJ’s third solo album, written and recorded amid the most limited periods of 2020’s lockdown, finds the DRB Lasgidi alum and alté pioneer at his most collaborative yet contemplative. The album (named after the area’s principal highway) serves not just as a dispatch from his hometown, but also as a vehicle for a deeper connection to it—a difficult concept for a musician born in London and reared in Lagos, who has spent most of his adult life commuting between the two.
BOJ’s journey of greater self-expression, aided by a similarly diverse group of collaborators he brought together during a lockdown songwriting camp, mirrors what he sees as the evolution of the alté scene—the term he and fellow DRB alum and longtime collaborator Teezee coined in their 2014 track, “Paper,” describing a sound and a lifestyle that can’t be pinpointed.
