Directed by Ekene Mekwunye, ‘Honey Money’ tells the story of Tobiloba (played by Timini Egbuson), a poor school teacher in his twenties from a humble background.
Tobi is the typical disadvantaged Nigerian kid with amazing credentials.
He studied computer science in university and graduated with high grades but yet can’t make anything of himself.
However, fortune later smiled on Tobi as he sees a chance to improve his fortunes when he meets Obi (Junior Pope). He is later faced with strong disapproval from his father when he starts showing up at home with things beyond his financial capabilities.
Honey Money boasts of talented ensemble cast featuring Timini Egbuson, Nancy Isime, Iyabo Ojo, Femi Branch, Junior Pope Odonwodo, Lina Idoko, Sandra Okunzuwa, Dayo Amusa, Somadina Adinma, Olaniyan Irewolede Cynthia, and more.
The movie opens the eyes of viewers to the fraudulent activities and modus operandi of ‘Yahoo boys’. It serves as a an eye-opener for all to be guarded in order not the fall victim. That’s obviously one of the lessons the writer hopes viewers take home. Another is the dignity in labour; if you commit a crime, be ready to do the time.
Honey Money is that type of thrilling movie that makes you unapologetically support the bad guy (Timini Egbuson).
Although they are some loopholes in his character, such as his bold tattoo (which should have been covered up anyways), Tobiloba is the star boy of Honey Money.
Coming from a very humble background with such a strict father (Femi Branch) who doesn’t even consent to his son helping his coursemates with their assignments in exchange for a brief use of their Laptops, yet he has bold tattoos all over his body, especially in the beginning when he was still a ‘good boy’.
In as much as you want to enjoy the movie as it flows, there are some scenes that get you thinking if the producer read the script properly before executing.
The stripper played by Angelina Idoko, did she do all stunts at the club just to be hired to spike a drink?
The law enforcement agencies raided their office and arrested all of the workers, but Kaima (Nancy Isime) and Tobi escaped. They immediately continued their fraudulent trade. None of the arrested workers ratted them out. They were not on the wanted list of the security agency as they kept moving about their daily lives freely until …
Honey Money does not meet up to the promise and expectations. A lot could have been done better. But surely, you will enjoy the movie despite the few lapses. It’s a 7/10 rating.
