Maniac Movie Review: Star-packed, poor script, half-baked acting

    By Ella ChiomaApril 22, 2023
    Maniac Movie

Olanrewaju Ola’s Maniac movie was out in the cinemas on Friday, and Kemi Filani was amongst the first set of people to see this Star packed project.

The movie has loads of A-list actors like Deyemi Okanlawon, Dakore Egbuson, Timini Egbuson, Jide Kosoko, Bimbo Manuel, Ken Eric’s, Beverly Osu, Sophie Alakija, Tina Mba, Efe Irele, among others.

Manaic also had appearances from Nigeria’s Afrobeat producer and singer, Young John, musician Ric Hassani and former big brother housemate Elozonam. Directed by James Abinibi, and special effects done by Hakeem Effect.

Maniac tells the story of two detectives who are on the verge of doubt as they have to work hand in hand to fish out a serial killer who specialises in killing girls and leaving a distinct trademark.

The exciting thing about serial killer movies is how they often portray police investigations. This can be fascinating to watch, as it gives the audience a behind-the-scenes look at the process of catching a killer, but for Maniac, the reverse was the case. It was from one annoying scene to the order.

The only characters that gave stellar performances are Dakore Egbuson, and maybe Deyemi Okanlawon the rest came to play.

Interestingly, her dialogue with Deyemi is inspiring, witty, poetic and amazing. Kudos to her for trying hard to salvage the movie.

However, unless there’s a plan for a part two, we would love to know the final fate of Dakore and Ken Erics marriage after the cheating brouhaha.

Timini Egbuson is enjoying being stereotyped as the bad boy in every movie he gets featured in. He should be versatile and try something new. We are eager to see the other sides of this very talented, young actor.

The worse of it all is the lead character, Fusion (Funsho), played by the movie producer, Olanrewaju Ola. He really struggled to stay in character and also say his lines. The acting and line delivery was so poor you could literally feel like he’s reading the script from somewhere.

It’s understandable that, as a producer, you would like to give acting a shot, but there are other appearances to fit in and not the lead character. The Fusion’s character would have made more sense if someone else who knows his onions handled it, perhaps Manaic would have had a pass mark.

If you are hungry for a good movie, then you should avoid seeing Manaic, you would be utterly disappointed. 2/10 is what we rate Manaic Movie.
