What exactly are chukka boots?
Chukka boots are ankle boots with two to three lacing eyelets and a tongue. Chukkas differ from Chelsea boots in that they do not have laces and instead employ elastic to embrace your foot and ankle.
While Chelsea boots are appropriate for some of us, I know plenty of gentlemen who prefer a less polished and tightly fitted kind of footwear for comfort and style, which is where the chukka comes into play.
With a rising reputation for adaptability, men’s chukka boots are now characterized as ‘everyday boots,’ suitable for both casual and formal dress.
Chukka boots’ long history
The chukka’s actual origins are unknown, however, it is thought to have originated in 1924, when the Duke of Windsor was a polo enthusiast and was seen wearing a pair.
In addition, a ‘chukka’ or ‘chukker’ is a pause in play in polo. It is, however, an Indian phrase meaning a leisurely walk or turn. So no one knows if the name originated in India or on the polo field.
One thing is certain. The chukka has unquestionable ties to the British soldiers in Egypt during WWII, who favoured the lightness and protection that a chukka boot provided while serving in the scorching sun and on the soft, dry desert soil.
After originally rejecting the chukka boot in the 1950s, the UK mod culture adopted it in the 1960s. Steve McQueen riding Triumph motorcycles or driving mustangs in the renowned 1968 film ‘Bullitt’ was a prominent example of its widespread appeal. The suede brown chukka boots on his feet exemplified McQueen’s iconic style, exemplifying masculinity, fashion, and elegance.
