A police officer who was hacked to dead by rioting commercial motorcyclists in the Ajao Estate area in Lagos state on Thursday, September 23, has been identified as Chief Superintendent of Police, Kazeem Abonde.
Late Abonde and his officers had stormed the area to confiscate motorcycles parading the area when they were attacked by the motorcyclists. They overpowered him, took hold of his rifle which they used to kill him. The motorcyclists also burnt the patrol van of the police. Read here.
A lawyer by profession, late Abonde was due to retire in a few months and was making arrangements to go back to his legal profession after his retirement.
Sources say the area is now a bit tensed as residents are panicking and worrying for their dear life.
An eye witness, Toyosi said “I was there yesterday. God saved me ooo…I almost fainted. Tear gas here and there”
An accessory vendor at the areas said “It was a terrible experience very close to our Store… We had to close ASAP and take cover!!! It’s well”
Reacting, actress Yetunde Bakare wrote on Instagram “It’s like the whole akoda association are tired of their job …now the government will take the ban more seriously and it’ll affect the innocent okada riders … wetin dey go chop in this hard economy”
Another online commentator wrote “Jungle Jungle Jungle! If these okada guys come out in mass who fit handle them? This country too dey quick hot abeg! Now every bike man in that zone go suffer. Talk less of the innocent ones wey go enter police wahala”
