Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire has called for a means to sanitize social media against racial trolls.
This is coming on the hills of attacks suffered by the club’s midfielder Paul Pogba who got racially abused after he lost a penalty against Wolverhampton on Monday.
The game saw United get the opener through an effort by Anthony Martial just before the break. However, the dream of securing three points away was cut short when Wolverhampton scored a stunning equalizer.
Shortly after, Manchester United were awarded a penalty after Pogba was brought down in the box. Unfortunately, Pogba threw away the chance for Manchester United to regain the lead as the goalkeeper saved his kick.
This led to a series of racial abuse rained on him by social media trolls.
Reacting to the racial abuse, Harry Maguire who joined Manchester United from Leicester City in the summer via an £80million deal, called on social media platforms to employ a new means of verifying accounts to curb racism.
He tweeted:
“Disgusting. Social media need to do something about it… Every account that is opened should be verified by a passport/driving licence. Stop these pathetic trolls making numerous accounts to abuse people. @Twitter @instagram”.
