At least 17 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to Edo State have been hospitalized after developing COVID-19 symptoms.
For treatment, they were admitted to Stella Obasanjo Hospital on Sapele Road in Benin, Edo State.
Dr. Osagie Ebomwonyi, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Edo Government-owned hospital, told Governor Godwin Obaseki during an inspection tour of the state’s infectious disease isolation centre at the hospital in Benin that despite the cases being unvaccinated, they were conducting studies and analyses to determine if the Delta variant was present in the state.
Edo Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Personal Assistant, Mr. Ozeto Waheed, confirmed the 17 Corps members were mobilised to serve in the South-south state.
According to Waheed, deployed corps members were always tested at the gate of the orientation camp, as instructed by NYSC Edo coordinator Mrs. Abiodun Olubukola, and those who tested positive for COVID-19 were generally sent to the isolation centre.
Obaseki indicated that his administration is prepared to deal effectively with the Delta version of COVID-19, while claiming that no verified cases of the variant have been found in Edo.
As part of attempts to protect Edo citizens from the deadly virus, the Edo Governor also said that plans were being made to vaccinate additional Edo inhabitants.
