Two second-half goals by Cyril Olisema and Wisdom Fernando propelled Akwa United to a hard-fought 2-0 win over Gombe United in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 14 clash at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Sunday afternoon.
After a rather boring first 45 minutes, Akwa United went in front from the penalty spot with 16 minutes left through captain for the day Olisema before Fernando wrapped up the win in stoppage time with a close-range finish.
Victory takes the Promise Keepers back to the summit of Group B albeit on superior goals difference to El-Kanemi Warriors who went down to Kano Pillars on Sunday. Talismanic forward, Mfon Udoh was missing in Uyo through injury.
In another Group B match, in Kano, Mohammed Gambo stars as Kano Pillars squeeze past El-Kanemi Warriors.
The experienced forward rewound the clock as the Pyramid city club beat El-Kanemi Warriors 2-1 at the Sani Abacha Stadium.
El-Kanemi were top of Group B going into the game and showed on a good number of occasions why they were perched.
Pillars had the ageless Gambo and substitute David Ibuka to thank for collecting maximum points.
In all the matches, there were no away win.
