FRSC to use fire arms – House Of Representatives

The House of Representatives Committee has revealed that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) operatives will begin to use firearms to reduce the excesses of road users in Nigeria.

The statement was made during the corps’ 2020 budget performance and 2021 budget defence, on Thursday in Abuja.

Akinfolarin Mayowa, Chairman of the committee disclosed that the 1992 Act of FRSC allowed the corps to carry guns, NAN reports.

He revealed that the board would meet with Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and also write to President Muhammadu Buhari to achieve the Act.

A member, Solomon Maren, continued that the committee would also discuss the matter with the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

The legislator insisted that there were more risks on the roads, adding that the FRSC should now carry guns to curtail this risk.

FRSC Corps Marshall, Boboye Oyeyemi, criticised incidents where road users threatened officer on duty.

Oyeyemi emphasised that weapon bearing for protection would reduce violent road users and protect officers.

He verified that the corps has 280 formations, with presence in nearly all the 774 local government areas in Nigeria.
