The Channels TV reporter who was shot during a clash between Shi’ite protesters of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria and the Police in Abuja on Monday has been announced dead.
The reporter identified as Precious Owolabi was announced dead in the news bulleting of Channels TV few minutes ago.
Before his death, Precious Owolabi was a member of the National Youth Service Corp, NYSC.
A statement by Channels TV reads:
“The management and staff of Channels Television are greatly saddened by the untimely and unfortunate death of such a promising journalist.
“We pray that God will grant his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss, and avail his soul eternal rest.”
The protest by the Shi’ites on Monday started at the Federal Secretariat before it proceeded on its way to the National Assembly. The protesters were stopped by police who had cordoned off the road leading to the National Assembly.
This lead to a clash which made the police to open live ammunition on the protesters. A deputy police commissioner was killed in the process while a NEMA emergency station got burnt down.
