Nollywood actress and movie producer, Mary Remmy Njoku has indirectly weighed into the marital drama between her colleague, Yul Edochie, and his estranged wife.
Kemi Filani reported days back that Yul had publicly dragged his estranged wife, asking her to drop his surname and return her bride price.
Now reacting to it, Mary stated that a mother shouldn’t be compelled to have a different name from her underaged kids, except she is allowed to change their names too.
She noted how one cannot build a name for many years and he asked to change it because someone doesn’t want a divorce.
Mary reemphasized that when a marriage ends, changing of name should be optional and besides some wives have been responsible for putting their surnames on the map.
“If marriage ends, change of name should be optional Biko. Someone cannot build a Name for many years and he asked to change it just because Oga no wan do again.
A mother shouldn’t be compelled to have a different name from her underaged kids. Except she is allowed to change their names too.
Besides, some wives have been responsible for putting their surnames on the map. Asking them to drop it is like stealing her copyright. Except she wants to”.
Taking to her comment section, many sides with her as they listed out Hollywood celebrities who still retain their husband’s surnames like Larsa Pippen, Kris Jenner, and co.
One Cuddles Amamasi wrote, “It is optional. Completely optional. No law insists on a change of name even after a divorce
One I Am Ebena Royal wrote, “Why not keep your name after marriage and not add your hubby’s name
One Angeladoo Official disagreeing wrote, “But the name will always remind her of the pain she has, is and will be facing in the marriage
One Balo Ng wrote, “Change of name is a choice. It’s not compulsory to drop a name after a divorce regardless of who filed for it. It’s a choice
One Princess Hyacinth wrote, “Exactly. This Yul Edochie need to get sense”.
Mary Njoku’s statement is contradicting Grace Makun, the wife of celebrity designer, Yomi Casual’s statement, urging May Edochie to get rid of her husband’s surname.
Grace advised her to get rid of the actor’s surname, admonishing the mother of three to take down his name from her IG page, grab her own identity, and flourish in it
Recall that when actress, Ireti Doyle, divorced her ex-husband, Patrick Doyle, she still kept his name.
Opening up on why she still beats his name in a Twitter interaction with netizens, Ireti Doyle defended her choice of keeping her husband’s last name, stating that the name ‘Ireti Doyle’ is now hers as it’s a name that is nearly 30 years in the making.
