Exclusive! Nollywood actress speaks on why AMVCA should be renamed Lagos City Awards for ignoring Asaba actresses

Nollywood actress, Amara Maduka has reacted to claims by some quarters that African Magic Viewers Choice Award AMVCA, should be renamed Lagos City awards for allegedly disregarding the Eastern based actresses and their movies.

Recall that like highly expected, the 8th edition of the prestigious African Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island was full of glitz, glamour and fun.

AMVCA is a gathering of industry professionals and lovers of African movies and television.

In an phone chat with Kemi Filani News, Maduka argued that Eastern based filmmakers are core businessmen who want to make money and care less about AMVCA or any other kind of awards.

“That’s not on AMVCA though to force them to send in their movies.. If the eastern movies don’t submit, how will they get nominated?? Most Eastern filmmakers are not interested in AMVCA or any awards.. They’re mostly business men and women focusing on the business part of the industry. Lagos filmmakers care more about awards. Igbo man no send your award oh.. He wants to shoot a commercial film and make profit,” she said.

Also speaking on the influx of low quality movies in the Nigerian cinemas, Amara Maduka said, “Truth be told, there are lots of low quality movies in the cinemas presently. In fact,  I think the cinema is somewhat compromised. I might be wrong, but if that’s not the case, some movies wouldn’t be in the cinemas. But what do I know.?”
