There is widespread fear among workers of the apex Central Bank of Nigeria as the Olayemi Cardoso-led bank reportedly sacks more workers.
Reports from DailyTrust suggest that the apex bank has sacked 50 more workers. The sack spree continues as President Bola Tinubu-led federal government battles to revive the nation’s economy.
According to reports, the latest sack cuts across 29 departments, raising the figure of the sacked CBN workers to 117 in the last 20 days.
The termination of appointments impacts directors, deputy directors, assistant directors, principal managers, senior managers, and lower-level employees.
Since March 15, when the disengagement letters were first sent out, sources have told reporters that the management has not specified any standard criterion for the decisions, which has left staff members of every cadre feeling anxious every other week.
A junior staff member at the bank who spoke to KemiFilani on the condition of anonymity disclosed that there is a perceived fear among bank workers as they do not know who will be the next to be laid off.
“Honestly, we do not know what is really going on, all I can say is that there is fear in the air because we are not sure of what will happen in the coming days,” the source told KemiFilani’s reporter.
However, a top management insider who was not authorized to discuss the subject told DailyTrust that the sacking frenzy would continue until the end of April.
Some of those who were affected claim that they have come to believe that Mr. Cardoso and the deputy governors are personally targeting them due to the lack of explanation or clarity behind the dismissal.
