Mbedu earned a Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand. She then began her acting career in South Africa, appearing in several TV series and soap operas.
Her breakthrough role was as Winnie in the 2016 drama series “Is’thunzi,” which aired on the South African channel Mzansi Magic. In Pelham, Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, at the Midlands Medical Center, Thuso Nokwanda Mbedu was born on July 8, 1991. Her multiracial name reflects the fact that while her father is of mixed Xhosa and Sotho heritage, her mother was Zulu.
Thus, after losing her parents while she was a little child, she was raised by her grandmother, who also served as her legal guardian. She attended Pelham Primary School to begin her schooling before moving on to Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School to complete her secondary education.
She was accepted at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) to study physical theater and performing arts management when she was 18 years old. In 2013, she received a degree with honors. She did enroll in a course at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City in 2012 though.

Thuso’s career began in 2014 when she appeared in a minor role in Isibaya, a Mzansi Magic Soap Opera, during its second season. Later, in 2015, she was cast in another role as Kisto, a wild youngster, and a journalism student, in the Scandal television series.
The same year, she was given the chance to play Kheti in a guest appearance in season two of the SAC adolescent drama series Snake Park. She went six months without landing another acting role.
She eventually received her first leading role in the television teen drama series Is’tunzi, which debuted in October 2016, six months after going without a job. She portrayed the character Winnie in the television show. Winnie is a goal-setter who fantasizes about marrying a wealthy and well-known rugby player, but her ambitions are dashed when she is made to move in with her stern aunt.
She had a panic attack while filming a series rape scene. She received a nomination for an international Emmy Award in the Best Performance category in September 2017 for her portrayal of Winnie in the television drama Is’tunzi. She was the lone nominee from an African nation that year.
In the historical limited series The Underground Railroad on Amazon Video in 2021, Thuso makes her debut in a foreign country.
