Anna Mae moved to St. Louis to be with her mother after her grandmother died in the early 1950s.

Anna Mae, who sang in her church choir when she was young, quickly immersed herself in St. Louis’ R&B scene, spending much of her time at Club Manhattan. In 1956, she met rock-and-roll pioneer Ike Turner, who frequently performed at the club with the Kings of Rhythm. Soon after, she was performing with the group as “Little Ann,” and she quickly became the show’s highlight.
