Rafael “Rafa” Nadal Parera was born on June 3, 1986, in Manacor, Balearic Islands, Spain. His father, Sebastian Nadal, is a businessman who owns insurance, a glass, and a window company, and he also manages his own restaurant. His mother, Ana Maria Perera, is a housewife. He was raised with a younger sister, Maria Isabel.

Rafael Nadal comes from a family of professional sports personalities. His uncle, Miguel Angel Nadal, was a professional football player who played for clubs like RCD Mallorca and FC Barcelona. Miguel also represented his national team. His other uncle, Toni Nadal, was a professional tennis player; it was Toni who introduced Rafael to tennis when Rafael was three.

Rafa started playing tennis at the age of three, and within no time, he was already the winner of the under-12 regional tennis tournament. It was his uncle, Tony, who trained him; despite being a right-hander, his uncle taught him to play left-handed.
