He was born on the 25th of September, 1967, in Isiama Afara Ukwu, Umuahia, Abia State, to Eze Israel Okwu Kanu, a traditional ruler and Ugoeze Nnenne Kanu.

Kanu attended Library Avenue Primary School for his Primary Education, after which he attended Government College Umuahia for his secondary education. He would later gain admission at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and moved to the UK before graduating.

Arrest
Nnamdi Kanu was first arrested on the 14th of October 2015 in Lagos and was charged with treason.
He was detained for more than one year, despite a court order for him to be released.

Following his disappearance, there were different speculations as regards his whereabouts. He would later reappear in October 2018 after photographs and videos of him in Israel went viral on social media.

According to the statement released by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, during a comment with the press, he disclosed that Kanu was arrested and brought back to Nigeria on Sunday, June 27, 2021, through the joint efforts of the security agencies in Nigeria and the Interpol.
Malami added that Kanu would be taken before the Federal High Court in Abuja to continue his trial on charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, unlawful possession of firearms and management of an illegal society.
