Lester joined Cordova High School, Rancho Cordova. He went ahead to complete his high school studies and graduated in 1977. It is in his high school days when he worked as a D J for KRAK radio. He also made sure he found time to practice reporting at KCRA Channel 3.
He later joined California State University in Sacramento after completing his high school studies. He never went ahead to complete his bachelor’s degree as he got a job offer. KCBS offered the job in San Francisco. He accepted the offer and left the college degree incomplete.

Lester kick-started his career as a journalist in 1981. He joined WCBS TV as a reporter in New York. He later went ahead to join KNXT in Los Angeles as a weekend anchor and also as a reporter. In 1983, he returned to WCBS TV and was offered similar positions as he had in KNXT.
In 1986 he joined Chicago’s WBBM–TV 1986. He lasted in this television station for fourteen years. He mainly anchored the evening news.
