    June Muriel Brown, better known as June Brown, was an English actress and author. She was well-known for her portrayal of Dot Cotton in the BBC soap opera “EastEnders” (1985-1993; 1997-2020). She received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the UK Soap Awards in 2005, and she was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours for services to drama and charity.

    Brown married actor John Garley, who suffered from depression and committed suicide in 1957, in 1950. In 1958, she married actor Robert Arnold. They had six children in seven years, one of whom died in infancy. After 45 years of marriage, he died in 2003 from Lewy-body dementia. She then relocated to Surrey and lived alone.

    In 2009, she was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress, making her the second performer to receive a BAFTA nomination for their work in a soap opera, after Jean Alexander. It was announced in February 2020 that Brown had decided to leave EastEnders permanently, at the age of 93.

    Before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in the early 1950s, Robert Arnold worked for a local newspaper in Stamford. He later joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, where he met his future wife, actress June Brown. They appeared in several productions together. He appeared in Sink The Bismark and Tunes of Glory, as well as several television shows, including Dixon of Dock Green, on which he spent seven years in the late 1960s and early 1970s. After moving to Folkestone with his family in 1970, he worked in local rep before returning to London in the late 1970s and joining The National Theatre.
