John Henry was born on 13th September 1949 in Quincy, Illinois. His real names are John William Henry II. His parents were farmers, which was their main source of income. They were soybean farmers. They did their farming business in different areas, which made them move from Illinois to Arkansas. Henry had an asthmatic condition, and when he was 15, they moved to Apple Valley in California.

Henry set up his company, John w. Henry & Company, after he had studied the market and saw that it was successful. He founded this company in 1981 and set up a small office, but after two years, it had grown and decided to look for a bigger space. He established his next office in 1989 in Boca Raton after he had moved to Westport, Connecticut.
Henry began his involvement in sports and purchased a minor league team of baseball. He went ahead to be among the founders of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He also purchased Miami Heat and later New Jersey Nets. In 1999 he purchased Florida Marlins from Wayne Huizenga for $158 million but sold it in January 2002.
He purchased Boston Red Sox with Tom Werner and New York Times, where he was the principal owner and Werner, the chairman. They improved the team by hiring qualified baseball players. In 2001 they established New England Sports Venture, which had 80% shares of the Boston Red Sox and later changed the name to Fenway Sports Group.
