Holzhauer was born on 23 July 1984 in Naperville, Illinois, to his parents Nachiko Ide Holzhauer and Juergen Holzhauer. His father was a German immigrant, while his grandmother was Japanese. When he was just four years old, his teachers were amazed by his arithmetic abilities.
As a child, he was very intelligent; hence he was moved up to a fifth-grade math class at the age of seven. He went to Naperville North High School, where he consistently got A’s on every math test.
Despite being a good student, he often skipped class to play online poker. Holzhauer was part of the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Team, which won a competition at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. In 2005, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics.
