Career

Khan attended prestigious institutions in Pakistan and the UK, such as the Royal Grammar School in Worcester and Aitchison College in Lahore, after being born into a wealthy Pashtun family in Lahore. His family included several great cricketers, including Majid Khan and Javed Burki, two older relatives who captained the Pakistani national team. Imran Khan played cricket in Pakistan and the UK in his teenage years. He continued to play while attending the University of Oxford to study philosophy, politics, and economics. Khan participated in his first international match for Pakistan in 1971, but it wasn’t until 1976, following his Oxford graduation, that he was given a permanent spot on the team.

Khan had established himself as a superb bowler and all-around player by the early 1980s, and in 1982 he was elected captain of the Pakistani side. Because of his physical prowess and attractive appearance, Khan gained notoriety in Pakistan and England. The British tabloid media also enjoyed his frequent attendance at upscale London nightclubs. Khan’s biggest sporting achievement came in 1992, when he helped Pakistan win its first World Cup title by defeating England in the championship game. That year, he announced his retirement, cementing his status as one of the best cricket players in history.

Khan continued to be well-known as a philanthropist after 1992. After having a religious revelation, he abandons his previous playboy persona and embraces Sufi mysticism. Khan served as the main fundraiser for the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, a speciality cancer hospital in Lahore that opened its doors in 1994, as part of one of his charitable endeavours. Khan’s mother, who passed away from cancer in 1985, is honoured by the hospital’s name.

Political journey

Following his cricket retirement, Khan became a vocal opponent of corruption and poor governance in Pakistan. In 1996, he started Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, often known as the Pakistan Justice Movement (PTI). The newly established party did not gain any seats in the National Assembly in the national elections held the next year, receiving less than 1 percent of the vote; however, in the elections held in 2002, it did slightly better, taking one seat, which Khan filled. Khan insisted that his party’s poor vote totals resulted from vote manipulation. Khan was one of several lawmakers who quit from the National Assembly in October 2007 in opposition to President Pervez Musharraf’s bid for the next presidential election.

Despite PTI’s electoral setbacks, Khan’s populist views were well-received, particularly the youth. He persisted in denouncing corruption and economic disparity in Pakistan and criticized US-led cooperation between the Pakistani government and insurgents fighting close to the Afghan border. In addition, he made harsh accusations against Pakistan’s political and economic leaders, claiming they were Westernized and disconnected from the country’s customs and religion.

Removal from office

As this was going on, Khan was still criticized for his tight ties to the military establishment, his harsh tactics against extremists, and the weak status of the economy. To strengthen the civilian government’s autonomy from the military establishment, the main opposition parties united to create the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) coalition in late 2020. PDM-organized protests and demonstrations demanded that Khan resign, accusing him of being an army puppet. These parties abstained from a vote of confidence that Khan’s government called in March 2021, which he narrowly won with the backing of his coalition allies. Later that year, after Khan failed to sway senior military officials, Khan developed a falling out with the establishment.
