Drew Allison Carey was born on May 23, 1958, in Cleveland, Ohio, to his parents, Lewis Carey and Beulah Carey. He grew up in the neighbourhood of Old Brooklyn in Cleveland.
He completed his schooling at James Ford Rhodes High School in 1975, where he used to play trumpet and cornet. He went to Kent State University and was expelled twice. After leaving college, Carey joined the US Marine Corps Reserve and served from 1980 to 1986.
From 2007 to 2012, Drew Carey was engaged to Nicole Jaracz, but they never officially got married. He is also like a father figure to her son named Connor. In January 2018, Carey became engaged to Dr Amie Harwick.
