Carlos Ray Norris, Wilma Norris’s firstborn, was born on October 10th, 1940. She had no idea that her son would become famous around the world as Chuck Norris, an actor and master in martial arts.
In order to provide for his family as he was growing up, Ray Norris worked as a mechanic, bus driver, and truck driver. Ray also had a drinking problem. After his parents’ eventual divorce, Ray essentially disappeared. Chuck discovered that he had to assist his mother in raising his two younger brothers.
Chuck Norris joined in the US Air Force after finishing high school. While stationed in South Korea, he began studying martial arts. It became into his passion. He transitioned into teaching karate after leaving the military.
Norris started his own karate schools after realizing he could make a good livelihood by instructing martial arts. In the 1960s, he had approximately 30 studios. He participated in several martial arts competitions as a hard competitor and won multiple titles. He achieved an astonishing six victories in the World Middleweight Karate Championship.
